Beck Responds to Kanye West Diss: “I Still Love Him and Think He’s Genius”

Beck has responded to Kanye West’s diss at the Grammy Awards, and here’s what he had to say: “I still love him and think he’s genius.”

Kanye West characteristically pulled a Kanye West at the Grammy Awards on Sunday by crashing the stage during “Album of the Year” Grammy winner Beck’s acceptance speech–much like his infamous stage crash and interruption of Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. Although this time, he didn’t actually say anything when he got on the stage.

Later that night, however, Kanye expressed his frustration with Beck winning the Grammy (over Beyonce, who was also nominated for the award) in an interview:

“If the Grammys want real artists to keep coming back, they need to stop playing with us,” he ranted. “We ain’t gonna play with them no more.”

He added: “Beck needs to respect artistry and he should have given his award to Beyoncé, and at this point, we tired of it… Because what happens is, when you keep on diminishing art and not respecting the craft and smacking people in the face after they deliver monumental feats of music, you’re disrespectful to inspiration, and we as musicians have to inspire people who go to work every day and they listen to that Beyoncé album and they feel like it takes them to another place.”

But if Beck was offended, he certainly didn’t show it.

“I was so excited he was coming up!” Beck told reporters after the awards show. “He deserves to be on that stage. How many great records has he put out in the last five years, right?”

And as for Kanye’s comments about Beyonce deserving the award more than him? Beck said, “Absolutely I thought she was going to win. Come on, she’s Beyonce!”

“You can’t please everybody, man,” said the Grammy winner of West’s rant against him. “I still love him and think he’s genius. I aspire to do what he does.”
