Kanye West, who dropped out of college to pursue his dreams of having a successful career in music, finally graduated on Monday when he received an honorary doctorate degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

“I am a pop artist, so my medium is public opinion, and the world is my canvas,” the rapper began his speech. “I’m sorry is something that you can use a lot. It gives you the opportunity to give your opinion, apologize for it, and give your opinion again. People say, ‘You should not be sorry for your opinions.'”

Uncharacteristically, West admitted to feeling the jitters–which was apparent as he made his speech. “I felt my nerves a bit, and I don’t feel that feeling a lot. The nerves of humility and modesty when being honored. A humanization, a reality of being recognized. And all I thought as I sit here, kind of shaking a little bit, is I need to get rid of that feeling. I need to not be nervous.”

“This honor is going to make your lives easier,” he added. “Two reasons: You don’t have to defend me as much, and I’m going to make all of our lives easier.”

Watch the rest of his speech below:

West’s wife Kim Kardashian, who could not be at the ceremony, congratulated her hubby on Twitter for the achievement: “Dr. Kanye West!!!!!!! I’m so proud of you baby & I know your mom would be so proud too!!!!”

Prior to becoming a famous Grammy-winning rapper, West studied painting at Chicago’s American Academy of Art for a brief period of time, then transferred to Chicago State University to get a degree in English. At the age of 20, he decided to drop out of college to pursue his music career.

And we all know how that went–if his immense fame and musical accolades are any indication.
